Some convention thoughts

Three days down, one to go, and so far it's looking pretty good.  The Democrats had a few minefields to avoid in the convention - they had to defuse the infighting, get people excited for November, knock down McCain a few pegs, and do a good job presenting Obama to the people just tuning in.  So far so good.  There's still one more task to do tonight, but at least it plays to our strengths.  Barring an incredible choke, Obama should be able to deliver a good speech.

How do we know that the convention has been going well (and yes, I'm knocking on wood every time I type that)?  What issues are the conservative bloggers trying to raise?  They can't bring up riots or PUMAs or anything other than that the half built scaffolding looks a little pretentious.  Well as long as you don't look at the Republican VA convention or Bush in 2004.  That's all they have right now.

Meanwhile, McCain has his own crisis going on.  He has to try to find a way of getting his base to unite behind him while keeping the maverick image.  The VP issue is a huge problem for him to work around.  In a fun role reversal, Republicans are suddenly scared about the image they're presenting, "Sources also tell me that Karl Rove and other Bush White House operatives continue to push hard for Romney. But one wag told me there's a housing problem: Governor Romney has five; Sen. McCain and his wife have seven."  The housing silliness might end up causing McCain to irritate his base.  Good job there with pushing that.

Meanwhile, it sounds like the PUMAs might be doing some good, tempting McCain into a base annoying Hutchinson pick because he thinks that he has a shot of picking up most of Clinton's votes.  This is what happens when you don't understand the Internet.  You can fall for your own trolling.

The Republicans have a tough challenge next week.   Bush has to pass the torch to McCain to appease their base but if he's too blatant about it, he'll piss off everyone else.  Moreover, there's going to be a difference in viewer interest.  The Republicans really have a two day convention at most.  Their convention is going to open on Labor Day and the people who aren't busy barbecuing and drinking are likely to be more concerned with Gustav than watching Dick Cheney.  It could be the worst case scenario where the only ones watching are Democratic operatives who are looking for advertisement material.  Meanwhile Thursday is the opening of the NFL season.  Even if people turn in after the game to see the keynote (talk about an adrenaline drop off from the NFL to McCain), all of the buildup will be ignored.

I'm not overconfident by any means.  I'm both a Democrat and a Seattle sports fan so I'm always waiting for the disaster to happen.  However, barring something horrible tonight, we accomplished our task incredibly well.  Now it's the Republican's turn.

Re: Some convention thoughts (none / 0)

I agree totally, The GOP has a PR nightmare next week, I noticed today watching MSNBC, that talking about Gustav hitting on tuesday they had to note that this was during the GOP convention,

and i thought, those 2 events are already linking in peoples minds.

McCain will pick his VP on the 3rd anniversary of Katrina and the GOP will hold their convention to nominate him as a 2nd Katrina is possibly hitting the coast.

Then after the NFL season kicks off, they will watch McCain give a telepropter speech, has anyone ever seen him give one of those before!?

Next week will be a joy for democrats to watch, but you almost have to fee bad for the GOP at this point, who was it again that said Hurricanes hit when they do because it's what God wants?

hmmmm maybe the GOP were right about that?

Dream for tomorrow but fight for it today.

Re: Some convention thoughts (none / 0)

I don't know when or where Gustav will hit, but if the first image after the GOP convention is some combination of Obama, Biden, anyone named Clinton, and a lot of folks from local churches and VFWs...well, it creates such an obvious contrast...AND it gives the media an excuse to point out that this is a repeated theme.  Obama was in Iowa to help with flood relief before it even became big news.

No way. No how. No McCain.

Seattle sports fan (none / 0)

and now we even have one less sports team to cheer for at this point.  I am still in Christine's corner but her lack of leadership on the Sonics issue (even though she may not have been able to do anything to prevent the final result) was disappointing.

Hi Blazer...

Well, been talking to Kevin here, I think Christine is in the fight of her life, and she needs a HUGE Obama coat-tail in the very blue areas...

I know you and I disagree on the Republics in this state, but the ticket I hear from my folks is Obama and Rossi is how they tally.

Christine needs the wind at her back.

Mediocre (none / 0)

The Clintons have been amazing at the convention.  The rest?  With the exception of Schweitzer- it's been kinda blah.  Hope tonight is better.  I don't expect much of a bounce out of this convention.  The more and more I see Biden and Obama together- the more it seems weird.  I'm seriously beginning to doubt the Biden choice now.  I really like Biden as a person, etc- but as a politician he seems a little, i don't know- STAGEY?  Is that a word?
Anyway- if McCain picks a woman, I think Obama will be screwed.  I don't think McCain WILL- but I do think it would shake things up A LOT.  Look, Hillary Clinton is  a huge star now- bigger than ever before, and I think Obama made a profound mistake by passing her up (that is if she didn't tell him she wouldn't accept VP- which I'm inclined to think she might have).  I just think she would've turned this election on it's head- and shook up the stagnant polling.

Time will tell.......

Re: Mediocre (none / 0)

Yes, as we all know, while Sebelius would have been absolutely scorned by the Clinton folks, that paragon of Feminist values, Kay Bailey Hutchison is going to move millions to the McCain ticket....

Good point (none / 0)

The only McCain VP pick that I'm actually fearful of is Sarah Palin, and I don't think she's in a place where she can accept right now.

Hutchinson would probably be the Republicans' Ferraro (only 24 years behind the times).

The pebbles have voted and the avalanche has begun.

I admit that I am nervous (none / 0)

The recent Gallup polling and Rasmussen polling shows no VP selection bounce, no bounce thus far from the convention (that may change) and my biggest fear is that McCain made up some ground with the celeb theme that he pushed.

I totally hate to admit that I agree with the wingnuts on anything but some are thinking Obama is playing into McCains hands tonight, and he just may be.

If this is too glitzy and glamorous, if it is seen by some as over the top the Repubs are going to say see we were right and push the celeb / arrogant / over hyped theme.

I know that this convention was planned months out and the sets have all been made months and weeks ago so there is no changing now but I just hope we strike the right tone tonight and that Obama looks like a President and not a rock star.  I hope we don't see a lot of special effects and stuff and just get a great speech worthy of a President.

Re: I admit that I am nervous (none / 0)

I did read today where Rasmussen said he is starting to see one.  So maybe he had some really good Obama numbers yesterday.
